This is a rather simple question..

Your response will probably be :

“The seventh Led Zeppelin studio album released in 1976.”

Technically you are correct.  However from an IP standpoint, you would be wrong.

The definition of presence is to be local, aware and ready to act. The act of readiness to collaborate immediately.

Sounds like a business opportunity …  Or a missed opportunity.

What does it mean ?   “Presence” ?

So what exactly does presence mean to me as a business owner?  My people are at their desks, on the phone, and email in real – time.  How can more accessibility be possible ?

In the Information technology world presence is the ability to be ready to communicate via Internet Protocol (IP) software or devices.  Presence signals this readiness to connect to the prospect immediately.

Let’s think about this for a second with an “old school” analogy.  Your client or prospect calls you and receives a busy signal …  What does this tell them ?  Can any additional information be exchanged ?  What about your accessibility in the near future ? Status cannot be communicated with a busy signal. It means you are too busy to attend to the clients immediate needs.

What really is Presence ?

Presence tools started out as instant messaging tool for online users.  Once Telecom software companies recognized that users in a corporate or selling environment would like to communicate a willingness to collaborate, they began to build software to support presence tools for IP Phone Systems and corporate networks.

One glaring inadequacy was created by this.  Presence tools could not be used on multiple access devices…  Yet.  keep in mind presence allows an individual to be completely accessible via email, phone and instant messaging no matter where they are or what device they have available.  Obviously presence is limited to the capabilities of the user device.

User devices can be anything, but especially with the explosion of handheld smartphones, better software and the rapid advance of broadband these features are now available everywhere with almost any device.  Communicating was never so easy.  In fact there may be too much communication and transparency with these new tools.

The best part is the user can control the destination, time frame, and method used to collaborate. Complete control of every facet of communication.
